POETS AND MUSICIANS:

Wavering Forms

'Again you show yourselves, you wavering Forms'

November's concert brings together two late works for clarinet and strings. The timeless Clarinet Quintet K 581 of Mozart is paired with the ravishing Quintet op 115 of Brahms, considered by some to be his most profound chamber work. In setting his poetry, both composers paid tribute to Germany's greatest writer and poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and Goethe returned the compliment, suggesting that of all the composers, he would have chosen Mozart to create an opera from his masterpiece, Faust. Readings from Faust, illuminate and reveal the 'wavering forms' evoked by these three artistic geniuses.

A TALE OF LOVE AND DARKNESS:

MÉLODIES HÉBRAÏQUES

Our winter concert explored the Jewish art music movement of the early 20th c when Russian Jewish classical composers mined the rich legacy of Jewish folk music and poetry to create a new, characteristically Jewish genre of classical music. The movement spread into Europe with composers such as Alberto Hemsi gathering Sephardic melodies and even to America where Lazar Weiner drew upon Yiddish song and where the Klezmer revival began. Come hear performances of this stirring and evocative music interspersed with the hauntingly beautiful words of writers such as Amos Oz, Yehudi Amichai, Paul Celan and others.
